UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School is seeking postdoctoral researchers and technicians.

Scholarship: Fully-funded
Degree: Bachelor, Master,Ph.D
Nationality: International Students
Location: USA
Application deadlines: Open

Scholarship Description:

Dr. Zhichao Xu will join the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UTHealth Houston as a tenure-track assistant professor in April 2025.

Dr. Xu completed his postdoctoral training in Dr. Jesse Dixon’s lab at the Salk Institute, where he modeled structural variants in the human cancer genome. He earned his Ph.D. from Tsinghua University and his B.S. from Peking University. His recent research has been published in journals like Nature, Nucleic Acids Research, Journal of Experimental Medicine, and Gene & Development.

The Xu laboratory aims to understand complex genomic arrangements and distal gene regulation mechanisms through advanced functional genomic screenings, genome engineering, single-cell genomics, and deep learning. We will combine our strengths in wet lab experiments with cutting-edge computational genomics. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment that values diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Looking ahead, we will support the growth of compassionate trainees and scientists, recognizing their unique career development needs.

Functional Cancer Genomics

Eligibility criteria:

  • Staff Positions Up to two research assistant positions are available for junior and senior ranks. Junior technicians considering graduate programs in genetics and genomics are encouraged to apply. We also welcome experienced technicians to help set up and run a new laboratory.
  • Postdoctoral Scholars We are offering up to two postdoctoral positions in distinct areas. We seek motivated, responsible scientists who have recently earned their PhD in relevant fields and thrive in collaborative environments. If you’re passionate about cancer genetics and genomics, we want to hear from you!
  • Postdoctoral Fellow in Cancer Genetics and Genome Engineering:
This wet-lab position focuses on developing cancer cell line models that replicate complex genome rearrangements in human cancers. The role involves applying genome engineering to study these rearrangements and their biological effects. Strong experience in genome engineering, synthetic biology, and single-cell sequencing is preferred.
  • Postdoctoral Fellow in Functional Genomics:
This hybrid position develops innovative genomic technologies to uncover new principles in gene regulation. The role involves conducting high-throughput CRISPR/Cas9 screens in cell lines to systematically perturb gene regulation pathways. Strong experience with Perturb-seq, multi-omic sequencing, and custom data analysis pipelines is preferred. Familiarity with advanced bioinformatics tools and integrating diverse genomic datasets is a plus.

Application Procedure:

Please submit a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three referees to Dr. Zhichao Xu at [email protected].
