Scholarship Description:
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Syracuse University is recruiting for fully funded PhD candidates and visiting scholars for Fall 2025 or Spring/Fall 2026. Several fully funded PhD positions are available, primarily focusing on solid-state battery energy storage:
- Polymer/oxide electrolytes for solid-state battery applications (materials manufacturing and chemistry)
- Electrochemical numerical modeling and/or AI/ML
Exceptional applicants in other fields will also be considered.

- PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park (2019-2023), under Dr. Eric D. Wachsman, former president of the Electrochemical Society and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors
- Master’s in Materials Science and Engineering, Columbia University (2017-2019)
- Bachelor’s in Metallurgical Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing (2013-2017)
With over 1,000 citations on Google Scholar and an H-index of 16, Dr. Shi has received numerous awards, including Inventor of the Year (Brown University) and the Nano Research Energy Young Star Gold Award. Syracuse University, founded in 1870 and ranked #53-#73 by US News (2019-2024), is a private research university in New York with a safe environment. It offers various Chinese restaurants nearby, and supermarkets are a short drive away, with shuttle services available. Winter activities include ice skating and skiing, while spring offers free courses in swimming, climbing, and yoga. Eligibility criteria:
- TOEFL score of 80 or higher.
- Students interested in pursuing an academic career will be given priority.
- Preferred backgrounds include:
- a. Solid-state batteries
- b. Autonomous manufacturing & AI
- c. Electrochemical modeling/AI
- Applicants with a master’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering will be prioritized.
