Scholarship Description:

Dr. Zhongyu Yang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Missouri. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2004 and his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in 2010. He was a postdoctoral researcher at UCLA from 2010 to 2015 and served as an Assistant Professor and then a tenured Associate Professor at North Dakota State University from 2015 to 2024. He began his position at Mizzou in 2025.

His research group focuses on characterizing the behavior of proteins and biomolecules in confined environments, including protein folding, transport, and the relationship between structure and function. These confined environments include natural protein conducting channels, molecular chaperones, cellular organelles, and synthetically created porous materials. The group is also developing protein-based composites confined within porous materials for applications in energy, environment, and medicine. The group receives support from multiple NSF grants and has ample startup funding from the University of Missouri. Additionally, the group actively assists members with green card applications and job placements.
