Scholarship Description:

Tongchao Li is a researcher at Zhejiang University’s Center for Brain and Brain-Machine Integration. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University in Life Sciences and Technology and his PhD from Baylor College of Medicine, studying under Hugo Bellen, a renowned geneticist and member of the National Academy of Sciences. After completing his PhD, he conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University in the lab of Liqiong Luo, another prominent neuroscientist. He joined Zhejiang University’s Dual-Brain Center in 2022.

His research interests focus on in vivo imaging of neural circuit development and single-cell transcriptome sequencing. He developed an in vivo imaging system based on cultured brains, providing powerful tools to study the cellular biology of neural circuits. His work has been published as first or corresponding author in journals such as Cell, Current Biology, eLife, PLoS Genetics, and JoVE. He received the K99/R00 research grant from the NIH, serves as a guest editor for JoVE, and was recognized as a young talent in the National Overseas High-Level Talent Program in Hangzhou.

His lab employs in vitro cultured fly brains combined with advanced imaging techniques, including two-photon microscopy and lattice light-sheet microscopy, to conduct four-dimensional studies of neural circuit development in flies and zebrafish under normal physiological conditions. The lab also develops novel genetic tools for neural labeling and manipulation in flies and mice to facilitate in vivo imaging of neural circuit development. Additionally, the research focuses on the mechanisms of protein isoforms regulating circuit development and their roles in neural regeneration. Young talents interested in cutting-edge explorations are welcome to join the team.
