Scholarship Description:
Peng Wei is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The George Washington University, with courtesy appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science. Contributing to the intersection of control, optimization, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, he and his group develop autonomy and decision-making tools for aerospace and aerial robotics. His current focus is on the safety, efficiency and scalability of decision-making systems in complex, uncertain and dynamic environments. He directs the Intelligent Aerospace Systems Lab (IASL). Peng is an AIAA Associate Fellow. He is an associate editor of the AIAA Journal of Aerospace Information Systems and chair of the AIAA Air Transportation Systems Technical Committee. He received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Purdue University in 2013 and his B.S. in control theory and information science from Tsinghua University in 2007.
Prof. Wei’s past and present graduate students have held full-time research positions and internships at Amazon, ByteDance, Mathworks, MIT Lincoln Lab, Airbus, Johns Hopkins APL, Kent State University, NASA Ames, FAA, American Airlines, Air France/KLM, TuSimple, Airmap, and Metron Aviation. Eligibility criteria:
- A PhD position will be available in his group from autumn 2024.
- The PhD position (fully funded by a Graduate Research Assistantship) can be in the MAE department, the CS department or the ECE department (at the student’s choice).
- Motivated students with an excellent mathematical background and strong programming skills are encouraged to apply, including but not limited to backgrounds in dynamics and control, optimization and operations research, statistical machine learning, robotics, computer vision and perception, and reinforcement learning.
