Scholarship Description:
Students who have graduated are working and staying in US companies, national laboratories, US universities, domestic universities, etc. I have two Chinese students who returned to China after graduation. One got his National Fellowship in two years (the topic is closely related to his PhD thesis) and is now in his third year of high school; the other just went back and got his Youth Fellowship in one year and now has over 1.5 million in Chinese Natural Science Foundation funding in hand, and both are in the fire pit of nanomaterials and catalytic energy, just like playing. The two Chinese students who stayed in the US both got tenure (senior scientist) positions at top schools, two American students, one is a co-founder of a medium-sized biofuels company, and one just graduated a year ago from a well-known biodetector company as a department head. There is also a small company in the group that is expanding rapidly.
The city of Brookings is a beautiful environment (safe to liveand work | live in brookings 2018 https://lnkd.in/gcwepxbr … e/2018/sd/brookings) and affordable ($700-800 total for a two-room apartment, $500-620 for a single room, low prices, apartmentsfor rent in brookings sd | zillow). The group is well funded and has its own instruments for materials analysis and preparation: transmission electron microscope (JEM2100 with cryo-electron microscope, scanning transmission electron microscope, EDX capability), pore structure analyser (ASAP2020); chemisorption/desorption analyser (AutoChem II, tandem GC-MS system), plasma enhanced CVD system, high resolution 3D printer (Nanoscribe’s photocopy system). nanoscribe’s photonic professional gt2), electrochemical workstations (chi760e 2 units, pine rotating electrode system 1 unit); zeta potential meter (zfinder 400), freeze dryer. 3 hour drive from Minneapolis.
Available Subjects:
New topics have recently been funded and new members are expected to do the following
- 1) Multidimensional detection of food quality/airborne diseases (experience in volatile molecule detection, electronic nose, hyperspectral, infrared detection preferred)
- 2) Degradable biopolymers/plastic packaging materials (experience in polymers, biopolymers, 3D printing preferred)
- 3) Biological separation technology (novel separation and purification processes for natural active molecules, familiarity with preparative chromatography separation technology, membrane filtration technology preferred)
- 4) Solid-state lithium-ion batteries (experience in solid-state batteries, electrochemical energy storage, ceramic electrolyte synthesis preferred)

- South Dakota State University, Department of Agricultural Engineering: Ph.D. and Postdoctoral Positions
- South Dakota State University, Department of Agricultural Engineering: Materials Engineering, Battery Materials, Electrochemistry
- English Language: TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo all acceptable
