Scholarship Description:
PhD positions with full graduate research assistantships (GRA) in Mechanical Engineering are available in Fall 2025 in Dr. Yi Wang’s research group at the University of South Carolina (Columbia/Main campus, https://research.cec.sc.edu/wang) to develop reliable autonomous systems. The GRA covers PhD tuition, fees, health insurance, and a stipend.
USC is the flagship university of South Carolina, and its Mechanical Engineering PhD program is ranked No. 31 nationally by the National Research Council. The College of Engineering and Computing is ranked No. 1 in the state for faculty research productivity.
Dr. Wang’s group focuses on computational and data-enabled science and engineering (CDS&E) and its applications in multiphysics systems, including robotics, autonomy, additive manufacturing, aerodynamics, and railroad engineering. The group aims to develop new methodologies and frameworks to integrate CDS&E with system engineering, emphasizing multiphysics and engineering intelligence.

Eligibility criteria:
- Hands-on experience with embedded systems and control modules, such as Jetson TX series, Intel NUC, Raspberry Pi, and Arduino.
- Experience with VIS/NIR camera systems or radar systems.
- Experience developing machine learning, signal processing, and optimization algorithms using PyTorch, TensorFlow, NumPy, and other relevant tools.
- Strong background in linear algebra and computational mathematics or mechanics.
- Experience developing computer vision and image analysis code using PyTorch, TensorFlow, OpenCV, and other relevant tools.
- Proficient in computing with MATLAB, C/C++, Python, or other object-oriented languages.
- Strong interest and motivation to conduct cutting-edge research, tackle real-world engineering challenges, and publish high-impact papers.
