Scholarship Description:

Dr Qin Xu is currently a tenured assistant professor and PhD supervisor in the Department of Physics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Prior to joining HKUST, Dr Hui received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Chicago in 2015 and conducted postdoctoral research at Yale University and ETH Zurich. Dr Hui is currently the head of the Complex Fluids and Soft Matter Laboratory at HKUST, where his research interests include soft matter composites, soft matter elastic capillarity, and complex fluid rheology, and has published a number of papers in high-impact journals such as Nature Materials, Nature Communications, Science Advances, PRL, PRX, etc. He is also the chair of the Hong Kong Research Council Teamwork Fund (CRF), the Eminent Young Scholars Scheme (ECS), the Good Matching Research Fund (GRF) and the Asia Science and Technology Pioneer Research Partnership. Experiments are well funded and interested students are welcome to join the team.

 Available Subjects:

Position 1: Postdoctoral researcher

  • PhD (experimental or theoretical) in mechanics, physics, polymer materials and related fields.
  • A high degree of autonomy and excellent teamwork skills are required.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Starting date can be discussed with the supervisor.

Position 2: One PhD student

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanics, physics, polymer materials and related disciplines
  • Pass the HKUST English Language Test (TOEFL or IELTS)
  • Commencement date is spring or autumn of each academic year.

Eligibility criteria:

Postdoctoral Researcher:

  • A competitive base salary is offered, as well as additional health insurance.
  • Postdoctoral contracts and salary increases will be reviewed annually based on research performance.
  • We will support outstanding postdoctoral researchers to apply for the HKRI Postdoctoral Fellowship and Research Assistant Professorships with a total salary of at least HK$420,000 per annum for successful applicants, with independent annual travel expenses (additional funding support will be provided to the group).

PhD students:

  • Minimum of HK$19,000 per month
  • Support for simultaneous application for Redbird Scholarship (HK$20,000 – 40,000)
  • Outstanding applicants will be encouraged to apply to the Hong Kong PhD Foundation (HKPFS) with a basic salary of not less than HK$330,000 per year.
